This naan bread recipe is super easy to make. Za'atar on top of fresh naan bread makes the most amazing flavor! You can make your Naan Bread with Za'atar spices as thick or thin as you want depending on if you want a crispy or chewy naan.

How to make naan bread dough:

  • Heat milk so it is slightly warm. You want it to be just warmer than room temperature, but not so hot to kill the yeast.
  • Mix the yeast and sugar in with the milk until it dissolves. Cover and set in a warm place to activate the yeast ~10-15 minutes. You can tell the yeast is active when a layer of foam forms on the top.
  • In a medium sized bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Form a well in the center.
  • Once the yeast is activated, stir in the water and the oil.
  • Pour the yeast mixture into the center of the flour mixture. Begin mixing with a fork. Once the dough starts coming together, you can knead the remaining flour in with your hands. Knead until a soft dough forms.

  • Grease a medium sized bowl with ~1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the prepared dough to the bowl. Turn once to coat the top with oil. Cover the bowl with a towel and place somewhere warm to rise until double in size ~1 hour. The warmer the temperature, the faster it will rise.

How to cook naan bread:

  • Heat your iron skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of oil to prevent the dough from sticking. You don't need to keep oiling the pan after this. The flour from the dough & oil will protect the other ones from sticking to the pan.
  • Once your dough has doubled in size, divide it into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a disk. Lightly flour the surface of a clean counter top. Using a floured rolling pin, roll each disk ~⅛" thick. You can make it thicker/thinner depending on how you like it.

  • Shake the excess flour off your dough.

  • Lay your dough flat on the heated iron skillet. Flip it once bubbles have formed all over the surface.
  • Cook the other side till it is golden brown. Remove the naan from the pan. Brush it with melted butter or olive oil. Sprinkle with herbs, spices, or fresh minced garlic.

How to store naan

  • These are best eaten fresh. If you want to store them, keep them in an airtight bag or container in the freezer.
