MY JOURNEY AS A REGISTERED DIETITIAN
For a long time I thought I was on the track to medical school, I had a little doctors kit that I loved to take care of my mom when she got sick. I remember dreaming of joining the peace core and doctors without borders. I wanted to make a difference in the world.
But I also had a pull towards food. You know life gives you hints about the path you should be on. Every Saturday morning I would wake up early before everyone else was awake. In the kitchen I would quietly pull pots and pans out of the cupboard to make everyone pancakes and treats.
One day I discovered the field of nutrition, where science meets food and I knew in my heart this is what I was meant to do with my life. I went on to get my bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics, never once thinking about switching my major.
After that I worked in the field, with women infants and children and it really opened my eyes to the day to day struggles many of us endure. I consider myself so lucky to not only have access to education, but really access to food, to basic shelter.
I went on to complete my master's degree in nutrition and path to sit for the registered dietitian exam. After I earned the "MA" and "RD" titles after my name I started working in the field, first with the elderly, then in private practice.
But something was missing.. something big was missing. I knew I was in the right field but the little girl in me said, I want to make a difference in this world.
REGISTERED DIETITIAN AND PHILANTHROPIST
Shortly after I got my Masters Degree, I met my now husband, who from day one encouraged me to follow my path. I quit my job and started working harder than ever on my blog, wanting to forge my own path, my own corner in the field of Registered Dietitians.
I am one of the lucky, who, thanks to my incredible husband, does not have to worry about going to work. Unlike most mothers, I don't have to worry about dropping my daughter at daycare and working 40+ hours a week. I have the opportunity to do what I want with my education.
My husband is Jordanian-Palestinian and through him and his family, I have found a deep love of the Arabic culture. I love the tight knit families who spend so much time together. I love the big cozy shared meals. Most of all, I love the sense of community, in being part of something bigger than yourself.
I want my daughter to know that feeling of being part of a close knit community, to know the food and culture of her people.
There are so many children in the Middle East, especially Palestine, who do not know the comforts that I take for granted. I have been deeply moved by the tragedy that has happened for years upon years, unknown to most of my fellow Americans.
I know in my bones that this was what was missing. The voice of the little girl inside me, always yearning to make a difference in the world. Through keeping the culture alive through stories and through food recipes on my page. And through donating half of all profits here on the Hint of Rosemary to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.
