ARE SMOOTHIES A GOOD WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Yes! Smoothies are an excellent way to lose belly fat fast. Smoothies can pack in servings of fruits and vegetables, which is important especially for those of us who struggle to eat produce.
You do have to be careful when making or buying smoothies. Sometimes, ingredients that look healthy are not so healthy for us. I want to teach you how to make the healthiest smoothie that will be excellent for your weight loss journey.
DIETITIAN TIPS FOR WEIGHT LOSS SMOOTHIES
- USE PLAIN FRUIT WITHOUT ADDITIVES. FRESH OR FROZEN. Some fruits are packed with sweeteners added. Make sure to choose fruit that is just plain fruit! Or, freeze your own fruit for smoothies at home from ripe fruit.
- ADD VEGETABLES LIKE AVOCADO AND SPINACH. I love adding vegetables to my smoothies to get more servings of vegetables spread throughout the day instead of just at dinner time.
- ADD A PROTEIN AND FAT. Protein and fat make your smoothie a complete meal! Don't skip these and just blend fruit with milk.. which would be more of a snack.
- ALWAYS LOOK AT LABELS AND ASK WHAT KIND OF MILK IS USED. Whether you're making your smoothie at home or buying it out make sure they (or you) are using only unsweetened milk. Flavored nut milks can pack in unnecessary sugar.
- ALWAYS USE UNSWEETENED YOGURT. The same as with the milk, make sure there is no sugar added to the yogurt in your smoothie for the healthiest smoothie possible.
What can I put in my smoothies to lose weight? The best things to add to your smoothies when you are trying to lose weight are a balance of fruit, vegetables, healthy fat and protein. Here's my go to formula for the perfect smoothie every time:
- Pick 2 cups of frozen fruit
- Pick 1-2 cups of vegetable (spinach, avocado, and zucchini are best as they are almost flavorless)
- Add a source of fat (nuts, seeds, nut butter, full fat yogurt, or avocado)
- Add a source of protein (nuts, seeds, nut butter, yogurt, milk. I stay away from protein powder)
- Finally add the liquid (unsweetened milk, unsweetened coconut water, or water)
HOW TO MAKE AN EASY WEIGHT LOSS GREEN SMOOTHIE
This is such an easy smoothie recipe for weight loss! You can make one every single morning if you want! And if you want to change the fruit, that is up to you! So many other kinds of fruit taste great in this smoothie like mango, cherries, berries, and more!
STEP 1: ADD ALL INGREDIENTS TO YOUR BLENDER
Let's get started! Grab your blender (yes any kind works!) and add all of your ingredients:
- 1 cup Pineapple
- 1 Banana
- ½ cup frozen Avocado
- Handful spinach
- ¼ cup Full fat yogurt
- 1 ½ cups Coconut water or milk
STEP 2: BLEND AND ENJOY!
Blend on medium speed. Depending on what kind of blender you are using, you might have to turn your blender and scrape down the sides a couple of times.
Blend until your green weight loss smoothie has no chunks of fruit or vegetables.
Pour into a glass or on the go mug.
Enjoy!
HOMEMADE WEIGHT LOSS SMOOTHIE MIX PACKS
If you read my post on how to freeze ripe avocados, this is an excellent smoothie recipe to use up those frozen avocado chunks. You can even make pre made smoothie packs where all you have to add is your coconut water (or milk) and yogurt in the morning.
For pre made smoothie packs grab as many zip lock bags as you want, and to each add:
- 1 cup Pineapple
- 1 cup Banana
- ½ cup frozen Avocado
- Handful spinach
Seal the bag and make sure to freeze flat so that all the fruit and veggies aren't stuck together in 1 big ball.
In the morning, simply empty the packs into your blender and add:
- ¼ cup Full fat yogurt
- 1 ½ cups Coconut water or milk
Blend and enjoy!

Would it be better if I swapped plain greek yogurt for the full fat regular yogurt? Would that be a little healthier option?

Do the ingredients NEED to be frozen or can I use fresh?
