WHAT'S IN AN ICED BROWN SUGAR OAT MILK SHAKEN ESPRESSO?
My Starbucks copycat drink is made with a few simple ingredients you probably already have at home! All you need is ice, oat milk, espresso, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso Ingredients:
- 1-2 teaspoons organic brown sugar (see below for the healthy version)
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 shots espresso
- 1 cup oat milk, unsweetened
- Ice cubes
WHAT'S IN THE STARBUCKS ICED BROWN SUGAR OATMILK SHAKEN ESPRESSO?
Here is the Starbucks ingredients list, according to their website, vs my homemade version.
Starbucks ingredients:
Ice, Oatmilk, Brewed Espresso, Brown Sugar Syrup [Invert Sugar, Brown Sugar, Water, Natural Flavor, Salt, Preservative Potassium Sorbate], Cinnamon
Homemade ingredients:
Ice, organic Oat milk, Brewed Espresso, Brown Sugar Syrup [organic brown sugar, pure vanilla extract, cinnamon]
I also want to note that I don't buy oat milk because it has a preservative in it called dipotassium phosphate. Dipotassium phosphate is generally recognized as safe, however some research suggests it can impact kidney function. My philosophy about nutrition is to not eat preservatives. So I make homemade oat milk for my oat milk shaken espressos. There is a new natural oat milk out that is also glyphosate free if you are looking for a good store-bought oat milk.
HOW TO MAKE AN ICED BROWN SUGAR OAT MILK SHAKEN ESPRESSO AT HOME
The brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is so easy to make! Most recipes are pretty heavy on the brown sugar, so I started with a reduced sugar "syrup." I also did not cook the syrup over the stove and found that it was just as delicious.
You can easily adjust this iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso recipe to make it sweeter, naturally sweetened, or even sugar free. Plus, if you want to use any other kind of unsweetened milk like almond milk, cashew milk, dairy milk it is just as good!
How to make the lightened up healthier Starbucks brown sugar "syrup":
In a small mason jar or cocktail shaker, add:
- a couple of ice cubes
- 1-2 teaspoons organic dark brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 shots of espresso
Cover and shake well till the brown sugar dissolves.
How to make the Starbucks copycat brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso:
In a medium sized glass, pour the iced sweetened espresso.
Add more ice cubes to fill about half way.
Fill to the top with oat milk.
Stir and enjoy!
HOW TO MAKE A HEALTHY ICED BROWN SUGAR OATMILK SHAKEN ESPRESSO
Want to make Starbucks iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso healthy? Here are two tips I have to make it way healthier at home:
- Use maple syrup, date syrup, or honey in place of the brown sugar. All three of these sweeteners are less refined than brown sugar and also have added health benefits like the prebiotics in raw honey.
- Use unsweetened oat milk. Also make sure that the oat milk is preservative and glyphosate free.
Vanilla and cinnamon are already healthy ingredients so no need to worry about them! And if you want to go a little further, make sure you are using filtered water for your ice cubes and filtering out any potential contaminants that come with tap water.
You can even make the Starbucks iced brown sugar shaken espresso sugar free which I actually love to make because the cinnamon and vanilla already add so much flavor!
