HEALTHY ICED PEPPERMINT MOCHA INGREDIENTS YOU'LL NEED
I used to love going to Starbucks and Dunkin, but once I started really looking, I mean really looking at how much sugar is in one drink I was horrified. As a registered dietitian I do love a good dessert, but I don't like the idea of drinking basically a dessert and calling it coffee.
Iced Peppermint Mocha Calories (Medium)- 420 calories and a whopping 49 grams of sugar according to the Starbucks website.
While we're at it, I want to show you the ingredients in one of those fancy peppermint mocha's: ICE, MILK, MOCHA SAUCE [WATER, SUGAR, COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, NATURAL FLAVOR], BREWED ESPRESSO, PEPPERMINT SYRUP [SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVOR, SODIUM BENZOATE, CITRIC ACID], WHIPPED CREAM [CREAM (CREAM, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CARAGEENAN), VANILLA SYRUP (SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVORS, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID)], DARK CHOCOLATE CURLS [SUGAR, CHOCOLATE MASS (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), COCOA BUTTER, SOY LECITHIN, VANILLA EXTRACT, MILK].
"Natural flavor" can mask thousands of hidden chemicals there's nothing natural about it. "Sodium Benzoate" is a nasty food preservative that's been linked to cancer. And all the soy is not listed as organic and is one of the top genetically modified crops in America.
So I took one of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts popular winter coffee items, the iced peppermint mocha, and recreated it at my house with healthy ingredients I felt good about.
Here's what you'll need:
- 1 tablespoon Cacao Mushroom Powder (Or just plain cacao powder)
- ½ tablespoon Sweetener of choice
- 2 shots Fresh espresso or ½ cup strong coffee
- Melted 100% dark chocolate (optional for garnish)
- 1 cup Milk of choice (I use flax milk)
- 2 drops Peppermint oil or extract
And if you want to make the peppermint cold foam, here's what I used
- 2 tablespoons organic heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons flax milk (or milk of choice)
- 1 tablespoon sugar or sweetener of choice
- 2 drops peppermint oil or peppermint extract
HOW TO MAKE AN ICED PEPPERMINT MOCHA LATTE AT HOME
If you love iced peppermint mocha from Dunkin or Starbucks, skip the drive thru, save some money, and skip the ton of sugar and make my recipe instead.
To make a peppermint iced coffee recipe at home, we're going to start by making the chocolate espresso first so that it has time to cool off while we make the cold foam.
By the way the cold foam is totally optional, I just thought it made this iced peppermint latte look extra fancy. It tastes just as delicious without the cold foam too.
STEP 1: MAKE THE CHOCOLATE ICED COFFEE
In a small mug, add:
- 1 tablespoon cacao mushroom powder (or just 1 tablespoon cacao powder)
- ½ tablespoon brown sugar or sweetener of choice
- 2 drops peppermint oil or extract
Brew 2 shots of fresh espresso right on top of the cacao powder. Mix well to combine the coffee with the cocoa. If you don't have an espresso maker, simply brew strong coffee and use about ¼-1/2 cup of it instead.
In a glass, add melted dark chocolate to the bottom. Use your milk frother to spin the melted chocolate on the sides, it's so fun and easy!
Add 1 cup milk of choice to glass.
Add ice.
Pour your prepared mocha chocolate espresso.
Set your healthy iced peppermint mocha aside while you make the peppermint cold foam.
STEP 2: MAKE THE PEPPERMINT COLD FOAM
If you want to take your iced peppermint latte up a notch, make this delicious peppermint cold foam next. If you don't feel like it, the iced peppermint mocha latte still tastes incredible without it.
For the peppermint cold foam, add the following to a mug:
- 2 tablespoons organic heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons milk of choice
- 1 tablespoon sugar or sweetener of choice
- 2 drops peppermint oil or peppermint extract
Use your milk frother to whip the cold foam till its thick and creamy.
Pour over your iced mocha.
Use some more melted dark chocolate as garnish your perfect iced peppermint mocha recipe!
Enjoy!
