DOES APPLE BUTTER HAVE SUGAR IN IT?
Yes apple butter is traditionally made with sugar added in. But, you can make as good as the Amish sugar free apple butter with just a few simple ingredients and your slow cooker. Apple butter without sugar is good for diabetics too!
SUGAR FREE CROCK POT APPLE BUTTER INGREDIENTS
This crockpot apple butter is super delicious and has NO SUGAR ADDED! I just used apples and a few basic ingredients:
Apples- I used a mixture of apples that I had leftover from the fall in my fridge. You can really use any type of apple that you have in this recipe. If you like your apple butter to be on the sweeter side, use a sweet apple variety like gala or fuji.
Apple cider vinegar- this gives your crockpot apple butter a nice tangy flavor! I use apple cider vinegar that has the "mother" in it.
Ground cinnamon, cloves & nutmeg- make sure you use fresh quality spices! Don't use ones that have been sitting in your cupboard for years because they will not taste as good as they can lose their flavor over time.
Vanilla extract- make sure to buy PURE vanilla extract and not artificially flavored vanilla extract.
Sea salt- I used just a touch of sea salt to help bring out the flavors of the apples and spices. 🙂
And that's it! Who needs to sugar to make their apple butter taste good when you can have it with no sugar added. Try it for yourself, you will be shocked how good it is!
SUGAR FREE APPLE BUTTER NUTRITION FACTS
1 tablespoon of my sugar free apple butter has 36 calories, 9 grams carbs, 1.5 grams fiber, and 0 grams of added sugar!
This apple butter is good for you since it has no sugar added! All that you are really eating is apples, a little apple cider vinegar, and spices!
Apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Fiber is great for your gut health because it feeds the good gut bacteria, which help to digest and absorb essential nutrients your body needs. Fiber is also essential for hormone balance because not only does it lower the blood glucose spike after eating, but fiber also pulls excess estrogen out of your system!
Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves have been used in cooking for centuries. They are delicious and fragrant and will make your home feel cozy. But, what most people don't know is that these spices have anti-inflammatory properties!
TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST HEALTHY SUGAR FREE APPLE BUTTER IN YOUR CROCKPOT
USE QUALITY SPICES. Spices, just like any ingredient, can degrade over time. They can also degrade in the light (artificial light included!). The best place to store spices is in a cupboard, out of the light. If you have had your spices for years, chances are they will not taste as good as they once did. Buy some fresh spices for this recipe to get the best flavor!
USE SWEETER APPLES IF YOU WANT YOUR APPLE BUTTER TO BE SWEET. Sweeter apple varieties include fuji, honey crisp, and gala. For this recipe, I used a combination of the apples I had in my fridge!
COOK FOR 1-2 HOURS UNCOVERED AT THE END FOR THICK APPLE BUTTER. Cooking your apple butter uncovered at the end (After you puree it) will really help to thicken it and caramelize it for an AMAZING flavor. Don't skip this step!!
STORE APPLE BUTTER IN AN AIR TIGHT GLASS CONTAINER. Keep your apple butter fresh in the fridge for up to 3 weeks in a GLASS container. Glass does not leech any yucky leftover flavors into your foods like plastic does. Make sure your container has an airtight lid so that you don't have any flavors from the other foods in your fridge getting into your delicious apple butter.

Making apple butter in a crockpot is so easy! Plus, leaving the apples and spices in your crockpot for hours and hours will make your house smell amazing!
In your crockpot, add all of your ingredients: 6 cups chopped apples with the skin ON, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves, ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and a pinch of sea salt.
Cover your crockpot with the lid and cook on low heat for 5-6 hours.
After 5-6 hours your apples will be very soft and cooked down.
Use an immersion blender to puree the apple butter completely.
NOTE: If you have a larger crockpot (like me) just push the apple butter to one side with a spoon so that it is deep enough to puree with an immersion blender. You will have to keep pushing the apple butter to one side until it is totally pureed.
Or, you can transfer it all to a blender or food processor and puree it until it is smooth. Just watch out because your apple butter will be very hot!
Next, keep the lid off your crockpot and turn the heat to high. Cook your sugar free apple butter in your crockpot for an additional 1-2 hours. You will see some steam coming out. This helps to thicken and caramelize your apple butter! Check it every half hour or so and give it a stir to make sure it is not sticking to the sides of your crockpot.
Allow your apple butter to cool before transferring it to a glass jar. Seal your jar with an airtight lid for storage in the refrigerator.
Sugar free apple butter will stay fresh for about 3 weeks in the fridge. If you don't use it all, you can store it in the freezer for up to a year! Just make sure to leave some room at the top of your container for expansion if you are freezing it.

I made this yesterday, but added some Splenda to make it a little sweeter. Think I would leave out the nutmeg and use less cloves, but all in all it turned out to be very good!
Sam

Teresa
I am diabetic and am going to make this. I’m really excited!! Has anyone canned this?
Kate
Can this be canned for those who don’t have freezer space?
Rosemary
I haven't tried canning it! I'm sure it would work great though as the apples have natural sugars!
Rosemary
I'm sure it would work great for canning too, I have not tried canning it yet! Let me know how it goes !
Paula
I have NEVER made apple butter in a crock pot before but I am trying to get off sugar, which is sooo hard, as well. Why add vinegar and what does it do?
I have green apples
Rosemary
It is so hard to go off sugar but so worth it!! The vinegar just helps bring out the apple flavor-- you can use lemon juice too instead of vinegar! for the apples, I'd use a sweeter kind like gala instead of the green so you don't have to use sugar
Maryian
I love the finished product. I did add a quarter cup of swerve brown sugar. I cooked mine 6 hrs, 2 hrs on high with lid off, then six more hrs lid on. Perfect color and texture.
Rosemary
So happy you loved it! Happy fall!
