HEALTHY RED WHITE AND BLUE POPSICLE INGREDIENTS
I first published my red white and blue popsicle recipe using just kefir (a drinkable yogurt), and different food colorings like beet root powder and blue spirulina. A lot of people couldn't find kefir or didn't like it so I have updated this popsicle recipe using different ingredients. I still have the original recipe in the notes of the recipe card if you want to give kefir a try!
- Red layer: red fruit (ex: cherries or strawberries) and coconut water
- White layer: full fat Greek yogurt and honey
- Blue layer: full fat Greek yogurt, honey, and blue spirulina
WHAT ARE RED WHITE AND BLUE POPSICLES MADE OF?
The red white and blue popsicles from the store are basically an artificially flavored frozen water mixed with artificial colors and other additives.. nothing healthy about them at all. Which is why instead of buying my kids the red white and blue pops from the store, I make healthy homemade ones instead.. and it saves a lot of money!
If you are looking for a store bought red white and blue popsicle, I did see one at Costco the other day that was dyed naturally and had less than 5 grams of sugar per popsicle which is pretty good for a store bought popsicle. Make sure to read the ingredient label and keep a look out for only natural ingredients!
TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST RED WHITE AND BLUE POPSICLES
USE FULL FAT YOGURT FOR CREAMY POPSICLES. If you want to make your popsicles creamy not icy, use whole milk yogurt. The fat in the milk will give you a creamy popsicle texture. If you're dairy sensitive, you can replace the yogurt with full fat coconut milk.
ADD SWEETENER IF YOU LIKE SWEET POPSICLES. While the little bit of honey in my popsicles is enough for us, they are definitely not as sweet as the store bought ones. If you want your 4th of July popsicles to be even sweeter, add extra honey or maple syrup to the mix.
FREEZE EACH LAYER SEPARATELY FOR DISTINCT LAYERS. If you don't want your layers to swirl together at all, freeze each layer for at least 1 hour before adding the next layer.
FREEZE YOUR RED WHITE AND BLUE POPS OVERNIGHT BEFORE TRANSFERRING TO STORAGE CONTAINERS. This will allow your popsicles to set completely.
MAKE MY RED WHITE AND BLUE POPSICLES
You can make my red white and blue popsicles in what ever order that you like, this time I did the red first, followed by the white and then the blue. The first time I made them (when I took photographs) I made blue, red, then white and did not freeze as long between layers so the colors kind of swirled together. You can make them however you like the important part is to be creative and have fun with it!
STEP 1: MAKE THE RED LAYER & FREEZE
Start by choosing any kind of red fruit that you like, you could use cherries, strawberries, raspberries, or even watermelon! I used cherries because it is cherry season here in New York right now and they were the perfect option.
Add your fruit of choice to your blender along with a bit of coconut water to help the fruit blend up completely. You could also use milk or yogurt in place of the coconut water for more of a creamy texture, but make sure to add beet root powder or pink pitaya powder for the brightest red color if you're adding white milk/ yogurt.
Add to your blender:
- 1 cup frozen cherries
- β cup coconut water
Blend and then divide evenly between 10 popsicle molds.
Place in the freezer to freeze while you prepare the white layer.
STEP 2: MAKE THE WHITE LAYER & FREEZE
I love using Greek yogurt in my healthy popsicle recipes because it adds so much protein into a treat that I feel really good about giving my toddler. I also love using full fat Greek because it helps our bodies absorb more of the nutrients from the yogurt. With the honey, I wrote 2+ tablespoons below because it is up to you on how sweet you want to make it. Start with plain yogurt and adjust to how much sweetener that you like.
In a bowl, mix together:
- 1 cup full fat Greek yogurt
- 2+ tablespoons of honey
Mix well to combine. Remove your popsicle mold from the freezer. You can freeze each layer solid for distinct lines in your red white and blue popsicles recipe, or you can freeze it a little so that each layer swirls together. It is up to you!
Divide the white layer over the red layer. Insert popsicle sticks into the center of each popsicle. Place back in the freezer firm up while you make the final layer of your red white & blue popsicles.
STEP 3: MAKE THE BLUE LAYER & FREEZE
Finally, for the blue layer in your popsicles!
In a bowl, mix together these ingredients:
- 1 cup full fat Greek yogurt
- 2+ tablespoons honey
- 1-2 teaspoons blue spirulina
Mix until well combined and then spoon over the white layer. Place your popsicle molds back in the freezer one last time.
Make sure you freeze your popsicles AT LEAST 3 hours!! I like to let mine freeze overnight to get really hard!
Once they are frozen solid, pop them out of the molds and enjoy your healthy red white and blue popsicles! They can be stored in an airtight bag or container in the freezer for up to a month.
Happy Independence day,
Memorial Day,
Labor day!

I LOVE that these are made with kefir and you've kept the colouring natural too - and they look amazing for the 4th of July! Kefir is such an underrated drink, I think, but I love how good it is for our gut!
