STARBUCKS HOT MATCHA LATTE INGREDIENTS
According to their website, Starbucks uses 2% steamed milk and milk foam, 3 matcha powder scoops, and 3 classic syrup pumps in a standard Grande hot matcha latte. Here are the exact ingredients on the ingredient label:
MILK, CLASSIC SYRUP [SUGAR, WATER, NATURAL FLAVORS, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID], MATCHA [GROUND GREEN TEA]
The milk Starbucks uses is not organic, I always recommend organic milk if you are drinking dairy milk because cows are treated with hormones that affect our health. "Natural Flavors" is a very tricky name on the ingredient label that is not regulated and can mask thousands of chemicals used for flavoring. Potassium sorbate is a preservative.
STARBUCKS HOT MATCHA LATTE CALORIES (using 2% milk, which is their standard in drinks)
220 calories, 29 grams of sugar, and 6 grams of fat.
Starbucks hot matcha latte with almond milk calories: if you choose almond milk instead, it will have about 160 calories in a Grande size.
MY HOMEMADE MATCHA LATTE INGREDIENTS
My homemade hot matcha latte tastes just as good as Starbucks, if not better! Plus, it is WAY healthier than the Starbucks version because who needs that much added chemicals and sugar.
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 1 teaspoon pure matcha green tea powder
- 1 teaspoon sweetener of choice (I love using raw honey)
HOMEMADE HOT MATCHA LATTE CALORIES (using soy milk as the milk)
131 calories, 6 grams of sugar, 4 grams of fat.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF MATCHA
Matcha is incredibly healthy, especially for our overall inflammation!
- Anti-Inflammatory (From Antioxidants like catechins & chlorophyll)
- Improves Concentration (From L-Theanine)
- Improves Memory (From L-Theanine)
- Gut Healthy (From Antioxidants & plant fibers)
- Improves Digestion (From plant fibers)
- Cleanses Liver (from Chlorophyll)
Matcha green tea powder also contains vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, chromium, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.
Keep these all these healthy matcha benefits for your body by choosing organic milk or organic unsweetened plant based milk and very lightly sweeten it with a natural sweetener like raw honey.
WHAT DOES MATCHA TASTE LIKE?
Matcha alone without any sweetener has a very earthy taste, similar to wheatgrass. It is not for everyone and I would definitely consider it an acquired taste. Matcha becomes very delicious and soothing when you mix it with milk and a little bit of honey.
HOW TO MAKE A PERFECT STARBUCKS HOT MATCHA LATTE AT HOME
Now let me show you how to make the best hot matcha latte recipe right at home that is incredible for your health! If you drink 1 matcha latte per day, you can see improvement in your gut health, skin health, and feel less irritable!
Step 1: Make the matcha paste
Add 1 teaspoon of matcha to the bottom of a wide mouth mug. You can get a special matcha ceramic, but really I typically just use a latte mug which is essentially the same.
Hold your matcha whisk over the top of the mug and slowly pour about ⅛-1/4 cup of hot (but not yet boiling) water over the whisk into the matcha. You want your matcha whisk damp before mixing the matcha.
Use up and down (vertical) and back and forth (horizontal) strokes with your matcha whisk to whisk the hot water into the matcha green tea powder.
Matcha making is a soothing and can be a very relaxing experience, so take your time! Making matcha traditionally was seen as a special time and it should not be rushed.
Once there are no particles of matcha powder left and the matcha is mixed into the water completely, set your mug aside while you steam the milk.
Step 2: Steam your milk
Next, steam your milk. You can use any kind of milk that you like, just make sure it is unsweetened milk and preferably organic to limit the amount of sugar and chemicals in your hot matcha latte.
Use a milk steamer to s team your milk until it is hot and frothy. If you don't have a milk steamer, you can also heat milk over the stove and whisk it the entire time to create a frothy creamy stove top steamed milk.
Step 3: Pour your matcha latte
Pour your steamed milk over the matcha in a circular motion to swirl the milk into the matcha.
Taste your matcha latte and add in any sweetener that you like with a spoon. I like to stir in about a small spoon of raw local honey into my matcha.
Hope you enjoy!

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS FOR THE BEST HOT MATCHA LATTE
USE HIGH QUALITY MATCHA GREEN TEA POWDER. Buy the best quality of matcha green tea powder that you can afford. Make sure that it is 100% matcha green tea powder and does not have anything else added, especially preservatives and sweeteners.
WHISK WITH HOT WATER USING A MATCHA WHISK. To get non lumpy and smooth matcha, whisk your matcha with a little bit of hot water before adding your steamed milk.
DO NOT USE BOILING HOT WATER. Heat your water until it is hot but not boiling. Boiling water is too hot for delicate matcha and will not only degrade its nutritional qualities, but it will also degrade its taste.
VARIATIONS & SUBSTITUTIONS
There are so many different variations you can do with a matcha green tea latte, from the type of milk you use, to the sweetener you use, to adding any flavorings. Even making a Dirty Matcha Latte with some espresso (my favorite drink).
- Milk. You can use regular cows milk for a smooth flavor, and whole milk for a rich creamy texture. Use almond milk for more of a earthy flavor. Oat milk is typically thinner and I wouldn't recommend but you can still use it. And coconut milk to get a slightly coconut flavored matcha latte!
- Sweetener. You can go classic with raw cane sugar. Or, use some honey for a more natural sweetener. Maple syrup will give you a nice subtle maple flavor in your matcha latte.
- Flavors. Use different extracts like pure vanilla extract or almond extract for a vanilla matcha latte or a almond matcha latte. You can even whisk in some cacao powder or a little melted dark chocolate for an indulgent chocolate hot matcha latte!
